A long time ago, I used to have a studio and photograph newborns in baskets and props. We would try for hours to get newborn babies to sleep and snuggle perfectly for photos. But after awhile, it felt mean! A baby, just days old, being crammed into a bowl or other prop just didn’t sit right anymore. That’s when I decided I would photograph newborns and their families in the comfort of their own homes. Artistic, natural, black and whites are the goal. They are timeless, looking their best printed, matted and framed. Here are my favorites from a recent newborn session. Baby E was wide eyed and very aware of his surroundings, and I love the photos.

Lifestyle newborn sessions are some of my favorite big life moments to capture. The wrinkly skin, the tiny toes, the little puckered lips…newborns are just so squishy and cute. Lifestyle sessions just feel better- there is no cramming a baby in a basket, no trying to get them to sleep for hours, we just let newborns be newborns in the comfort of their parents’ arms.

This little guy’s arrival was not the first time I met his parents- I actually photographed their engagement session in Ann Arbor and their wedding at the Saint John’s Resort. So it was so special to be invited into their home to continue to capture their big life moments. It’s always an honor.

When I got the email asking me to do newborn photos for baby Vivian, I was beyond excited. I have photographed Haley and Derek 5 times: two engagement sessions, their wedding, maternity and now newborn photos! Its such a privilege and honor to be invited back into a family’s life time after time to capture their major life milestones. Baby Vivian is the cutest, and here are a few of my favorites!
