If you’re dreaming of engagement photos that feel timeless with a modern, editorial edge, the War Memorial in Grosse Pointe is one of the most beautiful locations in Metro Detroit.
For this spring engagement session, we photographed both inside the historic mansion and throughout the waterfront grounds on a gorgeous May afternoon. The combination of elegant architecture, soft spring light, and views of Lake St. Clair created the perfect setting for a gallery that feels effortlessly elevated. We mixed classic portraits with a few editorial-inspired moments, creating images that are romantic, stylish, and still completely authentic to the couple.
One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions at the War Memorial is how much variety you can get without ever leaving the property. Whether you’re envisioning timeless portraits, magazine-worthy editorial images, or a blend of both, this location offers countless beautiful backdrops in every season.

The War Memorial has a timeless quality that’s difficult to find elsewhere in Southeast Michigan. The historic architecture, grand fireplaces, waterfront terraces, and manicured gardens create a setting that feels elegant without feeling overdone.
During this session, we moved between the rich interiors and the beautiful outdoor spaces, giving the couple a gallery with completely different looks while staying in one location. The contrast between the warm wood interiors and the light stone exterior creates so much visual variety.
Another reason I recommend this location is because it’s a fantastic option year-round. If Michigan weather decides not to cooperate, the indoor spaces are just as beautiful as the grounds, making it one of the few engagement locations that works well rain or shine.

This isn’t a location where you can simply show up with a photographer.
As soon as we arrived, staff greeted us and asked for our names to verify that we had a reservation to photograph on the property. The War Memorial requires advance permission for professional photography, and there is a location fee.
Be sure to contact the War Memorial Events team directly to reserve your date and learn about their current photography policies before planning your session.
This is probably my biggest insider tip.
The War Memorial often begins setting up weddings, corporate events, and community events the day before they take place.
For our session, several indoor rooms already had tables and chairs arranged throughout the space. The staff kindly moved the furniture in front of one fireplace so we could photograph there, but many other areas couldn’t be cleared because event setup was already underway.
We also learned that the back lawn would soon be used for an outdoor yoga class, so our time in that area was limited.
When you reserve your session, ask a few simple questions:
Knowing these details ahead of time helps you make the most of your session and avoid any surprises.

One of the easiest ways to elevate your engagement photos is by choosing outfits that complement the location.
Inside the War Memorial, you’ll find rich wood tones, warm browns, fireplaces, and historic architectural details. Outside, the stone exterior is much lighter with soft ivory and neutral tones.
For this location, I love recommending colors like:
These tones photograph beautifully against both the indoor and outdoor spaces while creating a classic, cohesive gallery that won’t feel dated years from now.
If you’re planning a more elevated wedding, consider bringing two outfits. Start with something timeless and romantic, then change into a slightly dressier or more fashion-forward look. That combination creates a gallery that feels both classic and editorial—the best of both worlds.

While spring at the War Memorial is especially beautiful, it’s truly a location that works all year long.
Fresh greenery and flowering trees make spring incredibly romantic. Summer evenings bring beautiful light along the water, fall adds rich color and texture, and winter allows couples to take full advantage of the stunning indoor spaces without worrying about the weather.
No matter the season, the architecture and historic charm make this one of the most versatile engagement session locations in Metro Detroit.
