If you’re looking for classic Ann Arbor engagement photo locations, the combination of the Clements Library and the Peony Garden provide just that. Together, they offer two completely different looks within a short driving distance—elegant architecture followed by lush spring blooms.

For this session, we originally planned to photograph at the Law Quad, but ongoing construction meant making a last-minute change. Luckily, the Clements Library sits just across the street and ended up being the perfect alternative. The result was a timeless, classic engagement session with plenty of variety.

Whether you’re planning a University of Michigan wedding or simply want beautiful Michigan engagement photos, this pairing is one of my favorites each spring.

Why Choose the Clements Library for Engagement Photos?

The Clements Library offers everything couples love about classic architecture—white columns, clean symmetry, historic details, and a neutral color palette that photographs beautifully.

Unlike some locations that feel trendy, the Clements Library creates images that will still look just as good decades from now.

One thing to keep in mind: the front of the building sits in full afternoon sun. Scheduling your session during golden hour creates much softer light and gives the building a beautiful glow.

It also makes an excellent backup if the Law Quad is unavailable due to construction or campus events.

What to Wear at the Clements Library

Because the library features warm brick walkways and traditional architecture, clothing choices make a big difference.

I generally recommend:

  • Neutral colors
  • Creams and whites
  • Navy
  • Black
  • Light blue
  • Soft neutrals

I’d avoid bright reds and vibrant pinks here, since those colors can compete with the surrounding brick rather than complement it.

Think polished, timeless, and slightly dressier than everyday clothing. Structured outfits, classic dresses, and tailored pieces fit the setting especially well.

Spring at the Peony Garden

After the library, we drove over to Nichols Arboretum’s famous Peony Garden, which is only 7 minutes away.

For about two weeks each year—the last week of May through the first week of June—the gardens come alive with hundreds of blooming peonies. If you’ve ever wanted those iconic spring garden photos, this is the time to schedule your engagement session.

What to Wear for the Peony Garden

The Peony Garden has a much softer feel than the library, making it a great place for movement and lighter fabrics.

Flowy dresses and linens photograph beautifully here, especially in colors like:

  • Soft pink
  • Dusty blue
  • Ivory
  • Cream

I usually recommend avoiding green since you’ll blend into the surrounding foliage.

This is one of those locations where simple styling goes a long way.

Best Time to Visit the Peony Garden

The Peony Garden is incredibly popular during peak bloom.

For the best experience, I recommend scheduling:

  • A weekday whenever possible
  • Golden hour, just before sunset

Not only is the light much more flattering, but you’ll also avoid some of the largest crowds. Even then, expect other visitors—this is one of Ann Arbor’s busiest spring destinations.

Parking & Logistics

Clements Library

The library is one of the easier Michigan locations to access.

  • No photography permit required
  • No photography fees
  • Street parking is usually easy to find during May before summer events and the return of students
  • Public restrooms are available inside the Michigan Union, about one block away, making it a convenient place to change before or during your session.

Peony Garden

The Peony Garden takes a little more planning.

  • No permit required
  • Free to visit
  • Parking is limited and fills quickly during bloom season
  • The nearby hospital parking structures and University dormitory lots are often the easiest options and are only about a block away
  • There are no public restrooms or changing facilities at the gardens, so plan outfits accordingly

Planning Your Ann Arbor Engagement Session

If you’re looking for Ann Arbor engagement photos that feel timeless rather than trendy, the Clements Library and Peony Garden make an incredible combination. You’ll get elegant architecture, one of Michigan’s most iconic spring gardens, and two completely different looks without spending your session driving across town.

As a Michigan wedding photographer, I always help couples choose locations, timing, and outfits that work together so your gallery feels cohesive from start to finish. Whether you’re getting married in Ann Arbor or anywhere across the state, thoughtful planning makes all the difference—and these two locations are some of the best Michigan has to offer during spring.
