September might just be my favorite time to photograph a wedding at the Detroit Yacht Club.
The summer crowds on Belle Isle begin to settle down, the weather is comfortable, and the light over the Detroit River becomes incredibly soft in the evening. Paired with the club’s historic architecture and waterfront setting, it’s the kind of venue that feels especially beautiful this time of year.
This wedding was everything I love about a September celebration in Michigan—classic, relaxed, and filled with beautiful light from beginning to end.

One of the things I appreciate most about photographing weddings at the Detroit Yacht Club is that you don’t have to choose between a waterfront venue and an urban backdrop—you can have both.
Many of my couples get ready at one of Detroit’s beautiful downtown hotels before heading to Belle Isle for their ceremony. For this wedding, the day began at the Renaissance Center, but hotels like the Shinola Hotel, The Westin Book Cadillac, and the Detroit Foundation Hotel are all just a short drive away. It makes transportation simple for your guests while giving your wedding day a completely different look from start to finish.
Before arriving at the Yacht Club, we made a few stops downtown for portraits, taking advantage of Capitol Park, Detroit’s historic architecture, and some of the city’s iconic murals. By the time we arrived on Belle Isle, we had already created an entirely different set of images before ending the evening with portraits along the waterfront at sunset.

It’s one of the reasons I enjoy photographing weddings here so much. Within a single wedding day, you can have editorial city portraits, timeless architecture, and waterfront views without spending hours driving between locations.

One of the details I appreciate most about the Detroit Yacht Club is the indoor ceremony room.
Rather than relying on elaborate décor, the room already has so much character. The large stone fireplace creates a timeless focal point, and the neutral architecture keeps the attention exactly where it belongs—on the two of you. It’s elegant without feeling overly formal, which is a balance that’s difficult to achieve.

The waterfront is, of course, one of the venue’s biggest draws.
As the evening light settles over the Detroit River, the shoreline takes on a warm glow that is especially beautiful in September. Stepping away from the reception for just a few minutes allowed us to create some of my favorite portraits from the day—quiet, relaxed, and filled with the kind of golden light every couple hopes for.
If you’re planning a waterfront wedding, I’d highly recommend leaving a little space in your timeline for sunset portraits. They’re always worth it.

The reception ballroom is equally impressive. There is plenty of space for dining while still leaving a generous dance floor, allowing the room to feel open throughout the evening rather than crowded once guests are seated.
It’s one of those details couples don’t always think about while touring venues, but it makes a noticeable difference once the celebration begins. Once the dance floor opened, there was still plenty of room for guests to celebrate without the space feeling cramped.

As a Detroit wedding photographer, I always appreciate venues that offer beautiful light, thoughtful architecture, and enough variety that every gallery feels unique.
The Detroit Yacht Club offers all of that. Between the historic clubhouse, the waterfront setting, Belle Isle’s beautiful scenery, and its proximity to downtown Detroit, it allows couples to experience so many different sides of the city without adding unnecessary travel to their wedding day.
If you’re planning a Detroit Yacht Club wedding or searching for a waterfront wedding venue in Southeast Michigan, it’s a venue that offers a timeless backdrop while still feeling distinctly Detroit. It’s always a favorite to photograph, especially during those beautiful early fall weekends.
