Spring graduation sessions at Michigan State University just have a different feel to them. The flowering trees around campus, the ivy turning green again, and the mix of softer colors everywhere make photos feel lighter and more alive compared to other times of year. If you’re hoping for magnolia trees, tulips, and peak spring color in your MSU grad photos, the best timing is usually the week before graduation.

For solo graduation sessions especially, mornings make a huge difference. Campus is quieter, popular spots aren’t packed yet, and we can move through locations faster without waiting behind huge groups of other grads. It also makes the whole session feel less rushed and way more relaxed.

One thing I always recommend for spring MSU grad photos? Bring a parent or friend with you. Not necessarily for the photos (unless you want a few together), but because having someone stand in line at busy locations like Beaumont Tower while we keep shooting saves so much time. Instead of losing 20–30 minutes waiting, we can keep moving by shooting off to the side and fit more variety into your gallery.

Solo grad sessions are honestly one of the best options if you want a more personalized experience. You have way more flexibility with outfits, locations, timing, and the overall pace of the session. There’s also more time for a variety of photos without feeling rushed trying to coordinate a big group. And- you get more photos than if doing a group shoot because the entire session is dedicated to you. You aren’t sharing the time.

If you’re planning spring graduation photos at Michigan State, peak floral weeks and weekend availability go quickly — especially during graduation season in East Lansing. If you don’t want to stress by taking photos during finals week or leading up to graduation, the week after graduation is beautiful too! The magnolia trees won’t be blooming anymore, but there will still be plenty of other trees in bloom. Plus- the lines will be gone and parking on campus is always easy and free that week. The Class of 2027 calendar opens in January- get in touch then to secure your spot!
