Downtown Detroit Engagement Photos: My Favorite Free Locations

Detroit has no shortage of beautiful places for engagement photos—but many of the most popular locations also come with photography permits and pretty significant fees.

The good news is that some of my favorite Detroit engagement photo locations are completely free. In fact, one of my favorite engagement session routes is simply wandering the streets in and around Woodward Avenue.

No single destination. Just a walk through downtown, stopping wherever the light, architecture, or street catches our attention.

Start at Parker’s Alley

I usually park at the Z Garage and start around Parker’s Alley. Brick, storefronts, string lights, little pockets tucked between buildings—there’s plenty to work with without staying in one place for long.

From there, we’ll usually make our way past Shinola, stopping for a few photos outside before heading toward Woodward.

Walk Woodward

Crosswalks, historic buildings, storefronts, the fountain, side streets, unexpected patches of light—there’s always something different within a block or two.

Instead of spending an entire engagement session at one designated photo location, we keep moving. It gives the gallery variety and makes the session feel much more like spending an afternoon or evening downtown together.

Wander Toward Candy Bar

From Woodward, I love making our way toward the area around Candy Bar.

Along the way, there are dozens of little places to stop. A doorway. A corner of a building. A reflection in a window. A quiet side street. Places you might not notice as a “photo location” until you see them through the camera.

And that’s really why I love photographing engagement sessions this way.

Detroit itself becomes the location.

Make a Night of It

If you’re already dressed up and downtown, don’t let your engagement session be the whole night.

Make a dinner reservation. Go for drinks afterward. Stay downtown for a while.

Your engagement photos don’t have to feel like an appointment sandwiched into your week. They can be the beginning of a really good date night—and years from now, the photographs will remind you not only of what you looked like, but what this season of your life together felt like.

And you don’t need an elaborate venue or an expensive photography permit to make that happen.

Sometimes all you need is Woodward, good light, and somewhere to wander.
